Kim Sunah

Conductor Sunah Kim studied organ at the chruch music department in Yonsei University. After her bachelor's degree, she went to Germany, Dusseldorf to become a ‘church musician’ and received the Kirchenmusik A-Examen along with a choral conducting diploma with honors.

In 2005, she firstly founded ‘Bachsolisten Seoul’ which is Baroque vocal ensemble and two years later, the professional choir, ‘Collegium Vocale Seoul(CVS)’ officially started to have their independent regular concerts and now CVS have been earning positive reputations as one of the sacred choral music specialists in Korea.

Sunah Kim, as an active and passionate conductor, has been participating with performances at numerous main concert halls, KBS, MBC, CBS Joy, CPBC programs and radio broadcasting concerts, as well as many classical music festivals, such as the Seoul International Music Festival, Korean Choral Music Festival, Seoul oratorio Festival, Korean Choral Music Symposium, 2nd Seoul Early Music Festival, the Chunchen Early Music Festival, both in South Korea, the Tsuru Early Music Festival in Japan, Linnich Kultursommer Festival in Germany. As a guest conductor, she also performed with the National Chorus of Korea, Bucheon civic Chorus, and civic Choruses of Wonju, Seoungnam, Siheung.

Sunah Kim has been establishing her position steadily as a baroque, classical, and sacred choral music specialist with Collegium Vocale Seoul and Collegium Musicum Seoul. In 2022, she took office as the 4th principal conductor of the Bucheon Civic Chorale.

Jo Ik-hyeon

Conductor Jo Ik-hyeon graduated from Seoul National University’s College of Music’s composition department as a musical theory major and received his M.A. in music from Seoul National University’s Graduate School of Music. He received his doctorate for choral music conduction from the University of North Texas in the U.S. and also received an award from the school’s president.

Dr. Jo is also a fervent music critic. His career in the field started when he got awarded by the musical magazine, Auditorium, for his Western music critique. When he studied in Dallas, Texas, he showed how influential Korean musicians were to not only the Korean-American society but also the mainstream American society by founding the professional choir, the Dallas Korean Chamber Choir. Dr. Jo led the renaissance of music in the Dallas and Texas Korean-American community by establishing the Dallas Chamber Orchestra, the Women’s Chorus of Dallas, the Dallas Korean Children’s Chorus and the Dallas Youth Soloist Ensemble. He also conducted and performed with various U.S. choirs, such as UNT’s best choir, the A Capella Choir and the Canticum Novum. Also, for the first time as a Northeast Asian, Dr. Jo led a choral performance at one of the best concert halls in the U.S., the Dallas Myerson Symphony Center.

Dr. Jo, who is currently Bucheon Civic Chorale’s permanent conductor, has also held the position of adjunct professor at Hyupsung University’s and the Presbyterian University and Theological Seminary’s choral conduction department. He is currently fostering talent by teaching choral music, conduction theory and practical technique at Seoul National University, Yonsei University, Korea National University of Arts, Korea National University of Education, Chung-Ang University, University of Seoul, Chonnam National University, Seoul Jangsin University, the Catholic University of Korea, Sungkyul University and University of Suwon.

Conductor Jo Ik-hyeon, who emphasizes that the essence of choral music lies in listening, says that choral music is needed because at its core lies controlling yourself by listening to other voices and being considerate of them.

He believes that choral music flourishes when the singers acknowledge and respect each other and that this music creates a peaceful world.
